The District Rotary Centre – The Building Project

History

The need for a Rotary District Centre was identified as way back as the late seventies. In the Rotary Year 1993-94 a District Rotary center Fund was launched with an initial contribution of
Rs 16,800/- and Rs 5,000/- from the Interact District Committee.
The project gathered further momentum in the years 1995-96 and 1996-97 when over Rs 1 million was collected on a major fund raising project spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City. However, due to the inability to procure suitable land to build the Centre, the fund was maintained.
In the Rotary year 1999-2000, the District Governor together with the District Rotary Centre Committee successfully negotiated with the Automobile Association to lease a section of their building to set up the Centre.
In 2002-03 the ideal block of land worth Rs 9 million and located near the House of parliament, was leased from the Government for the building of a new Rotary Centre. |
